During the workshop, Raul Oliveira IPBrick International CEO presented, to an international audience of top researchers in the field of software for Health Care, the case study of the setting up of a high performance and high bandwidth electronic mail and groupware system at the Hospital Geral de S. António. The demonstration focused on how the 1Gbit interface bandwidth of a Windows Server with Exchange was multiplied by 14. This was achieved by deploying 14 IPBrick Linux servers at the Oporto Hospital Geral de Santo António (HGSA). All servers are automatically installed with IPBrick.IC Linux CD, and managed easily through a very simple web interface (with a functional approach to manage a server system designed for common people, not only Linux gurus). Each server has a disaster recovery solution, that allows them to be up and running in 10 minutes in case of hardware crash. All users and computers connected to the system are defined in the master server, using the same simple web interface. The 14 servers provide Mail, Groupware tools, Domain controller (LDAP based), DHCP and DNS support services. Another important service presented, and now available at HGSA, is updated mobile access for medical staff to reach their contacts, calendar and agenda. Hospital Geral de Santo António staff can now synchronise their Calendar and Address Book with a wide range of mobile devices including the iPhone, BlackBerry and Windows Mobile, and many phones from Nokia, Motorola and Samsung.
